He was sworn into the Naval Service September 6, 1943 at the age of 17 at the Military Induction Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He attended basic training at the Great Lakes Naval training Center, Chicago, Illinois. He was an Aviation Ordnance rating after attending the Aviation Ordnance school in Norman, Oklahoma and was advanced to Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class upon graduating. His first assignment was to Aerial Gunnery school. Due to the surrender of Japan to the U.S. Forces he was shipped back to Fort Sam Houston where he was released with an Honorable Discharge May 13, 1946.
