In January 1941 he joined the National Guard and was inducted into the service February 3, 1941. He received special training as cook with the 71st Brigade, 187th Army Service Battery at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont. While on maneuvers at Fort Bragg, he received a Citation for his cooking. He took part in maneuvers in New York, Virginia and Tennessee. On November 2, 1943, he arrived in England and landed in France on June 8, 1944. He took part in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. On October 8, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Army after four years and eight months of service.
