Served as Lieutenant General. He was on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Thomas C. Hart, Asiatic Fleet in the Philippine Islands until ordered to leave in April 1942. Following tours in Europe and at Quantico, he joined the 6th Marine Division in November 1944 as assistant division commander and took part in the Okinawa campaign. Leading the 4th Marines ashore at Yokosuka on August 30, 1945 was a memorable event. He was in command of the Fleet Landing Force that made the first landing on the Japanese home islands following Japan's unconditional surrender.
