He was a member of the National Guard for four years before transferring in 1941 to the 27th Division of the Army. On March 10, 1942, he embarked from Camp Ord, California, for overseas service. From his station in the Hawaiian Islands he took part in the battles of Eniwetok, Saipan and Okinawa. His special assignment was radio technician. On September 10, 1945, he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on September 19, 1945, from Fort Dix, New Jersey.
