On February 12, 1942, he enlisted in the Coast Guard as a Boatswain's Mate. He was sent to Ellis Island, New York, for boot training and after three weeks was assigned to off-shore patrol and pilot duty on the Long Island and New Jersey coasts. In June 1943 he was sent to the training ship CGB-48 as an instructor in marlin spike seamanship and small boast handling with pier 9, East River, New York as his base. On September 6, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the service under the government's point system.
