On October 14, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served for 3 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater of Operations in a labor battalion as a longshoreman and was promoted to sergeant. He earned a battle star for his Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal by unloading ships under enemy fire in New Guinea. Honorably discharged on February 12, 1946 at Ft. Gordon, Georgia. Received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.
