On March 25, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. On April 20, 1942, he was called to active duty as a Hospital Apprentice First Class, and trained at the Naval Training Station, Newport, Rhode Island. He was changed to Pharmacist's Mate and was transferred to the Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. After a course in physiotherapy he was placed in one of the offices of the hospital as a ward writer.
