Activity During WWII

On January 20, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. He completed his basic training there with a rating of Pharmacist's Mate Second Class. He was then transferred to the U.S. Submarine Base at New Haven Connecticut. On April 2, 1943, he left for overseas duty in the European Theatre of Operations. He participated in the Sicilian Avalanche operation on July 10 and in the Italian S.A.F.T.A. landing operations, September 9 and subsequent dates. For the success of his Unit in the 4th Beach Battalion, in which he displayed great courage and gallantry, he received the Unit commendation. After three years and eight months in service, he was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945 at Lido Beach Separation Center.
