On September 11, 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was sent overseas two months later. He had his basic training at Hickam Field, Honolulu, where he also studied radio and telegraph. For his part at Pearl Harbor he received a Commendation for his bravery during the Japanese attack. Later he participated at the action at Midway and after that at the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. His Unit, the 12th Signal Platoon, received the Presidential Unit Citation for its action on the latter two islands. His work was that of Communications Chief. In late 1944, after spending forty-eight months overseas, he returned to the United States. Completing a 27 day furlough he reported to the Army Air Forces Redistribution Station No. 1, Atlantic City, New Jersey and was then sent to the Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. for medical treatment, where on May 22, 1945, he received a disability discharge.
