He had 1-1/2 years of college when he was drafted. He was sworn into the military at the Military Induction Center Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas on 16 July 1943 and reported for duty 30 July 1943. He received his basic training at Camp Wallace. After additional training he was shipped out to the South Pacific as part of the invasion of the islands. He was part of invasion of New Guinea where he was injured. He was confined to a military hospital until he was able to be transferred to the Medical Detachment, 147th Field Artillery Battalion. He was released from active duty on 12 March 1945. For his duty he received the Purple Heart, the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal.
