Working for Life magazine, she was the first American female war photojournalist and the first woman allowed to work in combat zones. She was attached to the U.S. Army Air Forces in North Africa, then to the U.S. Army in Italy and later in Germany. Became the first female photographer/writer to fly on a combat mission bombing the El Aouina Airdrome in Tunis, Tunisia. In the spring of 1945, she traveled with General George S. Patton throughout collapsing Germany. She witnessed the horrors of the notorious Buchenwald concentration camp. Dear Fatherland, Rest Quietly was published following the war and was her account of her time in Germany.
