He was drafted into the military and chose to join the United States Navy. He was sworn into the Navy on May 1944 at the height of the war. After basic training at the Naval training center, San Diego, California he received additional training in radar technology and became a radar technician. He served on board various ships in support of the invasion of Normandy and the European Theater of operation. With the surrender of Germany he was returned to the Naval Station Corpus Christi where he received his honorable discharge. For his service he received the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations Medal.
