At the age of 27 he was sworn into the Army at the military induction enter, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas on 15 January 1943 and reported to basic training on 22 January 1943. After basic training he was fast tracked in training due to the buildup in Europe. He saw duty at Camp Kilmer where he received additional infantry, rifle and small arms training. He attended ordnance handling school at that time. He was transferred to New York City where he was placed on a troop transport for Liverpool, England. At Liverpool he received additional training in preparation of the Normandy Invasion. He was assigned to the 3rd Army under General George Patton. He saw duty at Normandy, Northern France, Belgium, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Berlin. With the surrender of Germany he was transferred back to the United States and then to the Separation Center, Camp Fannin where he received his Honorable Discharge. He received the Good Conduct medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 5 Bronze Stars, the WWII Victory medal.
