Served as Rear Admiral. He was Commanding officer of battleship USS Washington during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942, when Washington sank Japanese battleship Kirishima. Commanded Battleship Division 8 during the Mariana Islands campaign in summer 1944. Participated in the Battle of Tarawa, Battle of Saipan, Battle of Tinian, Battle of Leyte, and Recapture of Guam. Received the Navy Cross, the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" and one 5/16" Gold Star, Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars, Asiatic-Pacific Liberation Medal with one silver and two bronze 3/16 inch service stars, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.
