Activity During WWII

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 8, 1942. He became an Aviation Cadet at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. Served on board the USS Lexington (CV-16) and was a pilot in Bombing-Fighting Squadron Ninety-Four (VBF-94) On April 14, 1944, he was awarded the Air Medal for his actions in the New Guinea Campaign. On May 1, 1944, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Participated in the Battle of Philippine Sea, Battle of Saipan, Battle of Guam, Battle for Ulithi Atoll, Battle of Leyte Gulf and Battle of Okinawa. He was flying a mission in his F4U-4 during the U.S. attacks against the Yokosuka Navy Yard in Tokyo, Japan on July 18, 1945. His plane was shot down. He was listed as missing in action and later declared dead. Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
