Entered U.S. Army and realized infantry would not fit his small size and weight. He then joined the United States Army Air Corps in February 1943. He went to Florida for his basic training and joined his unit and trained as a tail gunner. The unit was the 747th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, 55th Bomber Wing, 15th Air Force. They flew many missions from Italy to central and eastern Europe. On December 11, 1944 his aircraft was damaged (crashed) by anti-aircraft batteries and all crew ejected. He and two others were captured by the Germans and became Prisoners of War. He spent 6 months in German Luft Stalag 1 until liberation. Medals: European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Air Medal.
