Activity During WWII

He was killed in action when the cruiser USS Vincennes (CA-44) was sunk by a Japanese destroyer and cruisers during the Battle of Savo Island in the Solomon Islands on August 9, 1942. Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. The USS Willmarth (DE-638) was named in his honor.
