While living in the Philippine Islands, she volunteered as a civilian physician-surgeon for the United States Army. She was taken prisoner of war after the Bataan Death March and held in three internment camps. While interned, she worked to improve conditions for all prisoners. By late 1944, food supplies were so scare that inmates were eating vegetable peelings. On February 3, 1945, the camp was liberated by American troops. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom.
