In 1941, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to the Philippine islands where he was captured on the Bataan Peninsula and survived the 65 mile Death March. He was sent to Prisoner of War labor camps in Japan and released after three and one-half years at the end of the war in 1945.
