He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 483rd Aircraft Battalion where he operated a 40 mm anti-aircraft gun. His main objective was to protect airports from enemy bombers. He was involved on the battles of Iwo Jima and Ulithi Islands, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He guarded airports on Iwo Jima until the war ended on September 2, 1945. Served for 34 months and 10 days.
