He entered the V-12 Navy College Training Program, was commissioned into active duty on VJ Day. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to the USS Breton, sailing to Osaka, Japan to bring home the troops in Operation Magic Carpet. After the Breton was decommissioned, He continued his naval career as a training officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
