Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1941. He was assigned to Fleet Air Wing 4 as a radio operator and served in the Aleutian Islands 1941-1943. Received an Air Medal for his service during the Battle of Dutch Harbor in June 1942. He served as the personal radioman for the Admiral of the Seventh Naval District based in Miami 1944-1945 and then finished his tour of duty in Honolulu.
