He was a member of the 454th Bombardment Group serving as a navigator on the B-24 Liberator. The 454th flew missions in 1944-1945 over Austria, Bulgaria, France, Yugoslavia, Poland and Germany. His plane once landed in Brazil with only 3 out of 4 engines after a cylinder blew on engine #3.
