His assignments include Captain of the Port, Bay City, MI and Cleveland, OH; Coast Guard Supply Depot, Cleveland, OH; USS Havenson (DE-316) and USS Leopold (DE-319). He was one of 28 survivors of the torpedo/sinking of the USS Leopold (DE-319) on March 9, 1944. He received the Purple Heart medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
