Activity During WWII

Spike was too old with a family to enlist; he joined the Civil Air Patrol. He started flying lessons in June 1940 and soloed in a Piper Cub, August 4, at age 38. The last flight recorded in his Pilot Log Book was 1/23/1947 PIPER 30min. He was a leader of young men and Executive Officer of the Civil Air Patrol. As a civilian recruiter for the Army Air Corps he encouraged his younger peers to enlist.
