He joined the U.S. Navy around 1935. In 1937 he was aboard the USS Lexington and was on the search for Amelia Earhart when she went missing. After a brief stint in the U.S. Navy he transferred to the Army Air Corps where he flew 34 missions during WWII between March 6th, 1944 and June 24, 1944. His position was engineer/gunner and operated the top turret in his B-24 Liberator. He is a member of the Lucky Bastards Club. He continued his service after WWII.
