Rank: Lieutenant Colonel. He served in the United States Marine Corps as Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion, Second Marine Regiment and Second Marine Division. Location: Central Pacific Theater of Operations. His division participated in the amphibious assault against the Imperial Japanese forces on the Island of Betio, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, Code Name: Operation Galvanic. Saturday November 20, 1943 he was mortally wounded during combat operations against the Imperial Japanese army forces. At the conclusion of the Tarawa Battle, his Brothers-in-Arms buried him in the Lone Palm battlefield cemetery on Betio. Succeeding hostilities with Japan, his family requested that he be buried with Military Honors at Honolulu Memorial Cemetery Location: Honolulu, Hawaii, with interment October 10, 1949. This American Patriot received the following decorations posthumously: Silver Star and the Purple Heart. The Silver Star was awarded to the Colonel for Distinguished Gallantry in Action and Valor in Combat against an enemy force, and the Purple Heart for his ultimate sacrifice.
