Upon his commissioning as a U.S Navy officer on January 8, 1942, he became the first rabbi accepted as a Navy chaplain in the war and eventually was promoted to the rank of Navy captain. He was the first rabbi to earn this rank. During the war, the Navy sent him to Navy bases around the world as part of a Jewish-Catholic-Protestant chaplain team.
