Enlisted in January 1941, wings. Commissioned in August 1941. At Bellows Field, Hawaii in October 1941. He and others sat on a hill and shot rifles at Japanese planes that strayed from Bellows, on December 7, 1941 and December 8, 1941. Captured the first American Prisoner of War, an officer from a two-man submarine ran aground on a reef near Bellows. The Army Air Corps did not teach them to lead the target with rifle so they got zero zeros.
