On November 27, 1940, he was inducted at Camp Upton, New York and sent with the Medical Detachment of the 71st Infantry at Camp Dix, New Jersey for basic training. He continued with maneuvers at Camp Claibourne, Louisiana, Fort Lewis, Washington and Bowling Greene, Virginia. In August 1942 he arrived in Alaska, then to Adak and Attu in the Aleutian Islands. After two years in Alaska he returned to the lower United States. In November 1944 he attended a course for Medical Technicians at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. In March 1945 he reported for overseas duty in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. As Third Grade Medical Technician with Medical detachment, 71st Infantry, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, the American defense Ribbon, the European Theatre of Operations Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and two Combat Stars. He was honorably discharged on October 11, 1945.
