In April 1943 he was inducted into the Army and began his basic training in Boston, Massachusetts with the 278th Port Command. His duty overseas was unloading ships as a winch operator. His awards include two Battle Stars, the Invasion Arrowhead, French Croix de Guerre Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. Under the Army point system, he was honorably discharged from Fort Dix, New Jersey on December 15, 1945.
