He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and following basic training was assigned to a Naval Combat Demolition Unit in Fort Pierce, Florida. His group was renamed an Underwater Demolition Team and transferred to Maui, Hawaii for further training and then served in the Pacific Theater of operations throughout the remainder of the war. The Underwater Demolition Teams were the predecessors of the U.S. Navy SEALs.
