Rank: Machinist’s Mate Second Class. Inducted into the United States Navy October 20, 1937 at Omaha, Nebraska, with recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Station Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon his graduation from boot camp and maintenance schooling, he was transferred to the USS Astoria for duty, maintaining and repairing equipment. Friday, August 7, 1942 the Cruiser and her shipmates, along with an armada of U.S. Warships rendezvous’ off-shore of Guadalcanal in support of the impending invasion. Reported missing in action, lost at sea Sunday, August 9, 1942 when the Cruiser was sunk by Imperial Japanese Naval cannon fire in the vicinity of Tulagi Island Location: Southwestern Pacific Theater of Operations. Later his missing in action status ultimately, to read killed in action January 12, 1945. His name is permanently inscribed in the tablets of the missing, memorialized at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Location: Fort: Bonifacio, Manila, Philippine Islands. This American Patriot was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, for his ultimate sacrifice in defense of his country.
