He served in the U.S. Army on the front line in Belgium with the 106th Infantry Division, 423rd Regiment, Company I at the start of the Battle of the Bulge where he became a prisoner of war. He was assigned to a work Kommando, located in Dresden, Germany, and survived the deadly 1945 firestorm bombing raids.
