On January 28, 1942 he enlisted in the Navy convoy service and began his basic training at U.S. Naval Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island where he completed a course as a minesweeper. He served aboard the USS Doran and made three trips to Africa. His awards include the American Theatre Ribbon and the European-African-Middle Ribbon with two Stars. Up to V-E Day he was credited with 63 Transatlantic trips. In June of 1945 he was promoted to Advanced Ship's Serviceman Second Class, and received an honorable discharge on October 12, 1945.
