On March 3, 1941 he was called to the service and assigned to the Third Army Military Police at Fort Benning, Georgia. In June 1941 he was transferred to Company F, 22nd Infantry, Fourth Division. After two promotions to Corporal and then to Sergeant, he was one of a group of men selected to attend Officer Candidate School. Upon graduating in August 1942, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant and assigned to the 104th Division at Camp Adair, Oregon, where he served as Intelligence Officer for the First Battalion, 413th Infantry. Later he was given command of Company A at the same location. While on maneuvers he was injured and after several months in the hospital, was released from active duty on May 7, 1944.
