He Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1942 and was honorably discharged December 1945. Training was completed at Naval Training Station, Naval Operating Base Norfolk, Virginia and Naval Training School, University of Illinois. He served on the USS YP-422 (patrol boat-commissioned on 28 July 1942; put into service to patrol the waters around the Boston Navy Yard); at the U.S. Naval Station, Bora Bora; and finally onboard the USS Higbee DD-806 (Leaping Lenah-named after a Navy nurse); commissioned into service January 1945-destroyer class serving in the Pacific with Task Force 38.
