He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and attained the rank of Sergeant in the Hospital Train Service Command Unit based out of the Presidio. He was in charge of a 32-bed rail car and for three years traveled throughout the U.S. delivering wounded soldiers to regional hospitals.
