He was attending Louisiana State University until the beginning of WWII, Because of his strong chemistry background, he was conscripted into the war effort as a chemist for DuPont at Oakridge, Tennessee. His work focused on increasing the burn rate of gunpowder. Following that, he was transferred to Hanford, Washington to work on the Manhattan Project. For a period of time his responsibility was to collect samples from the reactor tanks and run titrations on plutonium.
