He entered the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 and served with the 34th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. After serving in Great Britain, he was landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, France four-days after D-Day to help push the German Army eastward out of France. He specialized in ground-based radio communications with the photo reconnaissance pilots.
