He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was assigned to the Naval Technical Training School in Millington, Tennessee. He was among the first group of African American men allowed to attend classes there. After graduation, he received the rank of Aviation Mechanic's Mate Second Class and was assigned to Floyd Bennett Naval Air Station in Brooklyn, New York.
