His college studies at the University of Kansas were interrupted by his military service. He enlisted in the United States Navy March of 1945 and was discharged in July 1946. He attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station. He took electronics training in Edmonds, Oklahoma and Corpus Christi, Texas.
