He served in the U.S. Navy as Quartermaster on the Landing Craft, LST-1. The LST-1 delivered troops and equipment at the pivotal amphibious invasions in Africa (Arzew and Bizerte), in Italy (Palermo, Anzio and Sicily), and Normandy on D-Day. At the end of the war days before the surrender, the LST-1 went to Japan to participate in the planned invasion there.
