He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in December 1944. He trained at the U.S. Great Lakes Naval Training Station. After passing the Eddy test he attended the Great Lakes Primary Radio Tech School. Later that summer, he went to Secondary Radio Tech School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center on Ward Island, Corpus Christi, Texas, where he remained to teach radio and radar to other service members until his discharge in July 1946.
