On January 24, 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and began his basic training at Fort Ethan Allen, Burlington, Vermont, with Battery B, 187th Field Artillery Battalion. In Europe he participated in the Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. He received the American Defense, the European Theatre Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and five Bronze Stars. In October 1945 he was honorably discharged from Fort Dix, New Jersey under the point system.
