On January 21, 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company F of the 9th Division of the 39th Infantry. after basic training in the United States, he was reported fighting in the Mediterranean sector. He was wounded in Sicily on July 31, 1943 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. in the early part of 1944. On August 9, 1944, he was medically discharged at Washington, D.C.
