He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines at 17 when merchant ships were used to supply the U.S. Navy and other branches of the military. At the age of 18 he was serving as the Chief Radio Officer aboard the Winthrop Victory, one of only two merchant ships present in Tokyo Harbor when the Japanese formally surrendered on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri.
