Activity During WWII

On November 6, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. navy. He received his boot Training at Great Lakes, Illinois. Practically all of his naval service was spent on the Battleship New Jersey, to which he was assigned after the launching in December 1942. He was action between January 1, 1944 and May 1945. His tour of duty included short stops at Pearl Harbor and Guam to pick up supplies before taking part in the bombardment of Tokyo. He participated in air strikes and in the occupation of Kwajalein, Truk and the Marshall Islands. He helped with the forces in the taking and occupation of Saipan and Guam. He was in the Palau and Philippine Campaigns and aided in the support of air strikes against Okinawa and Formosa and participated in air strikes on Tokyo in support of landing on Iwo Jima. After Japan's capitulation he headed for Okinawa and was transferred from the New Jersey to the Idaho. After three years overseas service he returned to the United States. Under the Navy point system he received his honorable discharge at Lido Beach on October 22, 1945.
