Activity During WWII

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1937 and completed flight school that same year. At the outbreak of the war, he was assigned to the fighter squadron on Midway Island. He flew 21 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and two Air Medals. By the end of the war, he had been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
