Entered the U.S. Army on December 28, 1941, 21 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He spent about 3 years in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks on the Island of Oahu; was assigned to the chemical warfare detail on the Island of Maui. He moved into the Pacific Theatre about 1944, which took him to Leyte, Philippine Islands; Yap, Western Caroline Islands; Okinawa, Japan and eventually he was rotated out from Seoul, Korea. He was part of the 45th Infantry Division, Chemical Warfare Unit. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service while serving in the Pacific.
